Ranking Member Adam Smith’s comments on the letter to the President calling for greater consultation with Congress on a potential sanctions relief package that may be part of a final nuclear agreement with Iran:
“Congress played a leading role in crafting and enacting the sanctions laws that brought Iran to the table to discuss its nuclear program. I fully supported imposing these sanctions and believe that they brought Iran to the table. Congress and the President have sanctioned Iran for many kinds of bad behavior, but ensuring that Iran is not capable of building a nuclear weapon should be our highest priority when dealing with this difficult country. To that end, as the deadline for talks draws closer, the Administration should closely consult and work with Congress to ensure that we can provide the right type and amount of sanctions relief if Iran agrees to limit its nuclear program."
