WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement after the United States government confirmed that a Russian anti-satellite missile test on Monday created a dangerous space debris field.
“Yesterday's anti-satellite test by the Russian military makes it clear that Moscow is willing to threaten the peaceful use of outer space, further militarize this domain, and disregard any consequences for all nations. The American people deserve a responsible assessment and response to this event, and we must hold Russia accountable with the support of our allies and partners. To prevent dangerous events like this from ever taking place again, we must continue diplomatic efforts to establish verifiable, rules-based order in space.”
