SEATTLE, WA – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement after President Biden announced that al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed during a successful U.S. strike.

“Al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri will never again threaten the United States or the rest of the world because of the skilled work and dedication of our intelligence professionals and the leadership of the Biden-Harris administration. This successful strike demonstrates our continued commitment to combatting terrorism and our ability to effectively accomplish counterterrorism missions in Afghanistan.

“As the Biden-Harris administration continues to meet our country’s counterterrorism challenges, the House Armed Services Committee will continue its rigorous oversight so that U.S. counterterrorism operations remain focused on the mission at hand while also protecting civilians from harm.”
