Washington D.C. – House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Adam Smith will speak at the Council on Foreign Relations on Friday, November 18, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. on the historic events taking place throughout the Middle East and North Africa and their implications for future U.S. foreign policy in the region.

Understanding that recent uprisings have been driven by a desire for freedom, opportunity and a greater voice for all people in how they are governed, Ranking Member Smith will outline an approach to U.S. foreign policy in the region that focuses on building relationships and trust with the people, not just governments. Moving forward, Smith will advocate for a cautious and flexible approach that respects the nuances of each country and their very complex paths toward better, more representative governance.
