Washington, DC –
House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton
(D-MO) announced that Committee Democrats elected
Congressman Vic Snyder (D-AR) to chair the Oversight
and Investigations Subcommittee and Congresswoman Susan
Davis (D-CA) to chair the Military Personnel
Subcommittee.
House Armed Services Committee Democrats met on Thursday to
select subcommittee chairmen to fill the vacancy expected
when Congressman Martin T. Meehan resigns from the U.S.
House of Representatives later this month. Congressman
Meehan has served as the Chairman of the House Armed
Services Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee since
the beginning of the 110
th Congress.
“I am pleased to
announce that the House Armed Services Committee Democrats
have elected two very able and dedicated members to lead
subcommittees,” said Skelton. “Congressman Vic
Snyder, who most recently has served as Chairman of the
Military Personnel Subcommittee, will become the new
Chairman of the Oversight and Investigations
Subcommittee. Congresswoman Susan Davis will become
the new Chairwoman of the Military Personnel
Subcommittee. Both Congressman Snyder and
Congresswoman Davis bring a great deal of experience and
expertise to their new roles and I am confident they will
make us proud as we work to support our men and women in
uniform.”
“I want to thank
Congressman Meehan for his service on the House Armed
Services Committee and in the U.S. Congress. As
Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and
Investigations, Congressman Meehan has distinguished
himself by his constructive and bipartisan approach. I
regret that our Committee will lose such a talented and
tireless member and subcommittee chairman, but I wish him
all the best as the next Chancellor of the University of
Massachusetts Lowell,” said Skelton.
Subcommittee chairmen were
selected by the Caucus of the Committee pursuant to the
Rules of the House Armed Services Committee and the
Democratic Caucus. The full slate of subcommittee
chairmen for the Committee will be submitted to the House
Democratic Leadership for their consideration, and the new
subcommittee chairmen will assume their posts upon the
resignation of Congressman Meehan. The House Armed
Services Committee Democratic Caucus also adopted a
unanimous consent request to assign the resulting
non-Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee vacancies to
the new Committee member who will be appointed by the House
Democratic Leadership to join the House Armed Services
Committee. As provided by the Committee Rules,
Chairman Skelton will appoint a member to fill the expected
vacancy on the Oversight and Investigations
Subcommittee.
