WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement after the bipartisan Naming Commission released its third and final unanimous report, fulfilling its mandate from the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021.

“I welcome the Commission’s final report and recommendations, the result of extensive community visits, public engagement, and historical research. The Commission’s recommendations – unanimous and bipartisan – honor the strength, diversity, and values of the United States military, the American people, and our democracy.

“Congress voted to establish this Commission as part of the Fiscal Year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act because addressing the commemoration of the Confederacy within the Department of Defense goes beyond symbolism. This effort has never been about re-writing history, but about choosing to commemorate that which reflects our shared values and inspires our force. I thank the members of the Commission for their work and members of the public for engaging thoughtfully with the Commission. Finally, I look forward to the Department of Defense’s implementation of the Commission’s unanimous recommendations, which will be another important step in fostering a more inclusive environment for all who serve in uniform, acknowledging our country’s history, and honoring the bravery of our service members and their families.”
