Washington, DC -- Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement on the 22nd anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks.

"Today, we pause to remember the sacrifice and heroism of those killed on September 11, 2001 in the brutal and horrific terrorist attacks in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

"Without the inspiring valor of our dedicated first responders, many of whom sacrificed their own lives, the toll would have been much higher that fateful day.  In the face of evil, they displayed the unshakable resolve of our values and country. And that dedication to duty has continued through the bravery and selflessness of service members and their families, who continue to sacrifice so much to defend the homeland.

"That work, however, cannot be borne by the military alone. The strongest and best path to peace and prosperity lies in the pursuit of diplomacy and deterrence. In memory of those lost on 9/11 and their loved ones, as well as those working to avert similar tragedies, let us recommit to the ideals that define our democracy for the American people and our friends and allies around the world."
