WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, today issued the following statement regarding the announcement of the unanimous agreement among European Union leaders to send 50 billion euros ($54 billion) in aid to Ukraine.

“The unanimous EU vote to provide Ukraine with €50 billion in aid to help them counter Putin’s brutal and unlawful invasion comes at a critical time. The Ukrainians’ indomitable spirit, unshakable resolve, and unflagging courage shows Russia can be stopped. Ukraine cannot, however, do it alone. The EU understands this and that this aid package is also an investment in their own defense and democracy worldwide. This commitment, along with the increased defense spending of NATO allies, reinforces the global partnership of over 60 countries that have come together to defend Ukraine and fight against advances of autocracy around the globe.

“Those in Congress who have attacked allies for not providing enough aid to Ukraine are the ones standing in the way of the United States doing its part to further strengthen this critical global partnership. Responsible Republicans in Congress need to stand up to the MAGA, Putin wing of their party and ensure that the United States’ strategic security interests are secured by passing supplemental funding, supported by the majority of Americans, to support Ukraine.”
