WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, today issued the following statement on the two-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“It’s been two years since Russia launched its brutal, full-scale invasion of Ukraine and we find ourselves at a crossroads. Despite the strength of a worldwide coalition that supports Ukraine, despite the support of the American public, and despite the support of the majority of Congress, House Speaker Mike Johnson has refused to bring the Senate-passed, bipartisan foreign aid supplemental that would ensure that Ukraine has what it needs to fight back to the floor for a vote.

“This isn’t just about Ukraine’s ability to remain a sovereign, democratic nation. Their fight – a fight that has not cost one American service member’s life – has kept Putin’s strongman autocracy from sweeping across Eastern Europe and threatening more partners and allies as well as our place in a free and prosperous world.

“Passage of the foreign aid supplemental would also invest in our own defense industrial base, resulting in good-paying jobs for hardworking Americans across the country while fortifying our national security.

“As I said after meeting with President Zelenskyy last week: For the people of Ukraine, for the national security of the United States, and for the state of democracy, Speaker Johnson must immediately bring the Senate-passed foreign aid supplemental to the House floor for a vote.”
