WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith (D-WA) today issued the following statement in reaction to the recent announcement that Representative Susan Davis (D-CA) will retire at the end of the 116^th Congress following nearly two decades of service in Congress:

“Congresswoman Susan Davis is an exceptional Member of Congress with an extensive record of selfless service to her community, constituents, and country.

“As one of the House Armed Services Committee’s most senior members, Congresswoman Davis understands profoundly that America’s military potential can only be realized through the care for, and support of, its members and their families. During her tenure as Chairwoman and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Military Personnel, she advocated for issues that have had an undeniable, lasting impact on all service members, like the repeal of the discriminatory policy “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” ensuring military members receive timely access to mental health care and services, and taking a lead role in the prevention of military sexual assault and the prosecution of those crimes.

“Congresswoman Davis is an incredible colleague and friend, and it has been an honor and privilege to serve alongside her as she championed issues that will be her legacy, specifically the pursuit of increased military pay and benefits, improved military family housing conditions, and a health care system worthy of their sacrifice.

“I can’t thank Congresswoman Davis enough for her selfless work on behalf of our men and women in uniform. Without a doubt I know she will remain active and continue her service from her California home. I wish she and her family all the best for their future.”
