WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representatives Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee; and Chrissy Houlahan (D-Penn.), Ranking Member of the Military Personnel Subcommittee, issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court of the United States ruling allowing President Trump’s ban on transgender troops serving in the U.S. military to be enforced as litigation continues.
“It’s unconscionable that the Trump Administration keeps attacking thousands of qualified and capable individuals who are willing to serve in our armed forces. Transgender service members have put their lives on the line in defense of our freedom and served openly with honor and distinction for nearly a decade. They fill crucial roles that will leave critical skills gaps if they are forced out.
“We are appalled by the Supreme Court’s decision to allow the Trump Administration to resume its discrimination campaign against transgender service members while litigation continues against this blatantly bigoted policy.
“We are hopeful the lower courts will move swiftly to ensure that this hateful ban is struck down once and for all.”
