Washington, D.C.— Today, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) released the following statement in response to the Republic of Korea’s announcement of new sanctions against Iran as part of its implementation of UNSCR 1929:

“I am very pleased to hear of South Korea’s decision to impose new economic sanctions against Iran. South Korea’s actions strengthen the growing international resolve to stop the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and prevent Iran’s development of nuclear weapons. South Korea joins an emerging consensus of states that have demonstrated the consequences of Iran’s failure to meet its international obligations, and I am hopeful that its actions will serve as an example and encourage other nations to take action to prevent Iranian nuclear proliferation.

“During the past two years, the United States has taken unprecedented steps to engage with Iran and the international community over the Iranian nuclear program in an effort to achieve resolution of the situation, and I encourage the continuation of strong action in this regard.”
