WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Ike Skelton (D-MO), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, applauded today’s landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court which struck down key components of the Military Commissions Act.

“Our ultimate objective has always been and will continue to be the swift prosecution and conviction of those who commit terrorist attacks against the American people, including our brave men and women in uniform.

“As a former prosecuting attorney, I am immensely pleased that the Supreme Court has recognized that the current Military Commissions system runs afoul of our Constitution.

“The Supreme Court has just disarmed the terrorists of one of their most powerful weapons against us. They can no longer claim that the U.S. is all talk when it comes to justice and the rule of law.

“Granting the detainees at Guantanamo access to federal courts will help us identify and correct the problems inherent within the current Military Commissions structure.  This, in turn, will accelerate prosecutions and decrease the likelihood that these prosecutions will be overturned.

“As important as ensuring tough prosecutions is holding firm to what we stand for as a nation.  This decision will allow us to reaffirm our role as global leaders on human rights and will help restore our credibility in the world.

“As Members of Congress, we will review this decision closely to determine what, if any, future action may be necessary.”
