WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement after President Biden announced that ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi was killed during a raid by U.S. special operations forces:

“ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi was removed from the battlefield thanks to the bravery of our service members, the continued support of our partners in the international coalition to defeat ISIS, and the leadership of the Biden-Harris Administration. This operation demonstrates our clear commitment to countering the ISIS threat.

“This successful operation does not, however, mark the end of the ISIS threat or the counterterrorism challenge. The United States must remain vigilant in the face of such threats. The House Armed Services Committee will continue its oversight of Department of Defense counterterrorism operations with a focus on advancing the mission and protecting civilians from harm.”
