SEATTLE, WA – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement after the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis in Yemen agreed to extend the UN-mediated truce for an additional two months.

“The UN-mediated truce has already produced important results by stopping the worst of the fighting, saving thousands of lives, and opening Yemen to crucial humanitarian aid. The extension announced today is encouraging. Ending the war is a priority, and the extension of this ceasefire advances the goal of a comprehensive, inclusive, and permanent peace settlement.

“After years of undeniable suffering, the Yemeni people deserve peace and a secure future. As this truce continues, it is imperative that all parties continue to abide by the terms of the ceasefire so that a lasting peace agreement that puts an end to the Yemeni peoples’ suffering can be realized. I look forward to working with the Biden-Harris administration to support ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure peace and increase the desperately needed flow of humanitarian aid for the Yemeni people.”
