WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, today issued the following statement after President Biden announced the nomination of Christine Wormuth for Secretary of the Army.

“Christine Wormuth is a steadfast public servant who has dedicated her career to the country and our national security, and I believe she will make an excellent Secretary of the Army. At a time when our civil–military relations have grown strained, I am glad that President Biden has chosen a civilian public servant like Christine, who has deep national security experience in the Department of Defense and National Security Council, to lead one of the service branches.

“With today’s announcement, the Biden-Harris administration has again confirmed their commitment to building a diverse, inclusive government with another historic nomination. Our armed forces face myriad challenges, and Christine Wormuth’s experience and service will be a boon to the Department of Defense. I look forward to working with Ms. Wormuth – once she is confirmed – to ensure our force can meet the national security challenges of today and tomorrow.”
