WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement after Representative Jim Langevin (D-R.I.) announced that he will retire at the end of the 117th Congress following more than twenty years of service in the House of Representatives.

 

“Congressman Jim Langevin has made history and shaped the future of U.S. national security policy as a Member of Congress and as a valued member of the House Armed Services Committee. Through his service and leadership, Congressman Langevin has delivered results for Rhode Islanders, our men and women in uniform, and their families.

 

“As Chair of the Subcommittee on Cyber, Innovative Technologies, and Information Systems, Congressman Langevin has served at the leading edge of our country’s response to the growing consequences of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and other emerging technological challenges for our national security. Future generations of policymakers will benefit from his leadership and expertise on these issues, including his service as a Commissioner on the Cyberspace Solarium Commission and his work as a co-founder of the Congressional Cybersecurity Caucus.

 

“Even as he has strengthened U.S. national security when it comes to the challenges of the future, Congressman Langevin has also made history as the first quadriplegic American elected to serve as a Member of Congress, where he has relentlessly advocated for millions of Americans living with disabilities. I cannot thank him enough for his leadership on the Committee, and while we will all miss Jim in Congress, we wish him and his loved ones the best.”
