WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee (HASC), introduced a resolution of inquiry today calling for President Donald Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to turn over all communications related to recent military operations against the Houthis that were shared in an unsecured Signal app text chat, which included a journalist, in advance of the military action. Ranking Member Smith’s resolution also calls for the White House and Department of Defense (DoD) to provide any information related to laws, policies, and standards and practices for their policy on delivery of classified and sensitive information.
“The actions taken by President Trump’s team in advance of U.S. military operations against the Houthis in Yemen threatened to endanger the lives of U.S. service members and compromise the mission. That demands investigation, and Congress has a duty to conduct oversight. When the President and his top advisors sidestep or ignore legitimate concerns, that demands wholehearted bipartisan support for upholding congressional oversight responsibilities, as previous Congresses have done,” Ranking Member Smith said. “The American people deserve to know the truth and what President Trump is doing to make sure sensitive information is properly protected and this mistake doesn’t happen again. My resolution will help get answers, hold the President and his Administration to account, and provide us with the information we need to help ensure this never happens again.”
