WASHINGTON, D.C. House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Adam Smith (D-Wash.) released the following statement in response to the House voting to pass a War Powers Resolution to end hostilities in Iran. The resolution was introduced by House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gregory W. Meeks and co-sponsored by Ranking Member Smith and House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Jim Himes.

“The message from today’s bipartisan Iran War Powers Resolution vote was crystal clear: Trump must immediately end his catastrophic war of choice against Iran.

"We are over three months into Trump’s ill-conceived war, and he has failed to achieve any of his administration’s ever-changing strategic objectives: ending Iran’s nuclear ambitions, removing its highly enriched uranium, or regime change. Instead, Iran has gained greater leverage, continues to destabilize the region, has a younger and more hardline Ayatollah, and we’re looking at having to pay Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which was open before Trump launched his war.

“Losses continue to accumulate, from causalities of American service members and innocent civilians to tens of billions of dollars of taxpayers’ money being wasted while driving up the cost of gas and groceries at home and throttling economies around the world.

“Today’s vote was also a reflection of the American public’s overwhelming rejection of Trump’s staggeringly unpopular and abject failure of a war. Enough is enough. He must end it now."
