WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement in response to Ukraine agreeing to accept a U.S. proposal for an immediate 30-day ceasefire and the announcement that the U.S. is resuming military assistance and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

“Ukraine agreeing to a 30-day ceasefire proves President Zelensky’s point that no one wants peace more than Ukraine.

“In light of Ukraine taking this brave step, it is critical for the United States to fulfill its side of the bargain and immediately resume paused U.S. military assistance and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

“The decision to halt the assistance and intelligence sharing was beyond reckless. It took all the pressure off Putin while crippling Ukraine as it continued to fight for its survival. It also threw into question America’s reputation as a reliable ally.

“It is now the responsibility of the President to put pressure on Russia, which to this point has not budged in its demands on Ukrainian territory, sovereignty, and democracy.

“Providing security guarantees and resuming military aid and intelligence sharing are critical to forcing Putin to the negotiating table. Failing to apply adequate pressure on Putin will be seen as capitulation on our part and will likely see Putin continue with his brutal and unjust assault on Ukraine.”
