WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement in remembrance of the 23rd anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks.
“Each year, we pause to remember the sacrifice and heroism displayed in response to the devastating terrorist attacks in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001. We do this to honor the lives lost that day and renew our commitment to ensuring democracy endures at home and around the world.
“Were it not for dedicated first responders and courageous everyday Americans, many of whom sacrificed their own lives to save countless others, the number of lives lost would have been far greater. That includes the passengers on United Flight 93 who valiantly fought back and prevented their hijacked plane from reaching its intended target. We pause to reflect on their sacrifice and the ongoing toll suffered by first responders and their families in the decades since.
“We also honor the bravery and selflessness of service members and their families
who continue to make sacrifices to defend the homeland, and we look ahead at what more can and should be done. The United States cannot bear this burden alone. By renewing our commitment to partners and allies we honor the lives lost on 9/11 and continue our work to further strengthen our national defense.”
