SEATTLE, WA – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement after the announcement of a two-month extension to the UN-mediated truce between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis in Yemen.
 
"The extension of the truce in the Yemen conflict represents another encouraging step in the effort to build a more lasting peace in the region and end the conflict that has caused one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. When the first two-month truce was announced in April, I reiterated that ending the war in Yemen must remain the ultimate goal for all parties. In the two months that followed, we saw signs of progress toward improving the everyday lives of people in Yemen, including the resumption of some flights to and from the airport in Sana’a and the import of fuel and other much-needed goods. The fact that the parties abided by the terms of the April ceasefire and then agreed to its extension demonstrates the effectiveness of the Biden-Harris administration’s diplomacy-first approach, the vital role of the United Nations as a trusted mediator, and the importance of participation by all parties in forging an enduring peace in Yemen."
