WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement in response to reports that the Trump Administration has halted delivery of weapons and support for Ukraine.
“Arming Ukraine to defend itself is an investment in U.S. security. Cutting off promised support to Ukraine harms U.S. national security and only benefits Vladimir Putin.
“The Administration has not consulted with Congress on this reported decision, including what else was prioritized and the trade-offs that were considered. In this context, cutting off a crucial avenue of support for Ukraine in a critical moment of their national survival is strategically and morally wrong.
“This decision clearly appears to be part of an effort to reward Putin, even as Ukraine has agreed with every U.S. demand and peace proposal thus far. It calls into question exactly who the President supports in this war. Based on this decision and others since President Trump returned to office—including repeated attacks against President Zelensky, the initial halt of intelligence sharing and assistance to Ukraine, undermining the worldwide coalition that has helped Ukraine defend itself for the past three years, and spreading Russian propaganda as U.S. policy—the answer would seem to be that the Putin-wing of the Republican party is now in control.
“This reported decision is wrong. The United States should deliver weapons that it promised to Ukraine."
