Washington D.C. – Today, Republicans on the House Armed Services Committee passed an amendment that would prevent gay and lesbian couples from getting married or hosting “marriage-like” ceremonies on military installations.

Ranking Member Smith was firmly opposed to the amendment, stating:

“For years, dedicated Americans have had to hide who they are to serve the country they love. We brought an end to “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” last year, and now members of this committee are looking to turn back the clock and find new ways to discriminate against gay and lesbian service members. These men and women serve with honor and distinction and this amendment sends a message that their service is not valued. I fully disagree with that message and, as we move forward, I will work to ensure that the men and women willing to die for this country have the rights and respect that they deserve.”

Text of Amendment:

A military installation or other property owned or rented by, or otherwise under the jurisdiction or control of, the Department of Defense may not be used to officiate, solemnize, or perform a marriage or marriage-like ceremony involving anything other than the union of one man with one woman.
